At the Faculty of Engineering and Science (ENG), Department of Materials and Production at Aalborg University, a position as Postdoc. in Circular Manufacturing is open for appointment from 01.09.2025 or soon hereafter. The duration of the position is 2 years.

The Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The Department features several strong, international, and innovative research groups that comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. The activities encompass research and education in materials, mechanics, physics, production techniques, robotics, industrial management, and innovation. The laboratory facilities are world-class, and research activities are often in collaboration with industry.

The position will be within the research group Mass Customization in close collaboration with the Center for Industrial Production. The position is on the main Aalborg campus.

Job description

The PostDoc is part of a large research project on Circular Manufacturing, funded by the Danish Industry Foundation. The project aims to establish a national lab-based testbed on circular manufacturing, creating multiple demonstrators on how technologies aid in operationalizing circular manufacturing. This includes e.g. developing effective methods for managing End-of-Life (EOL) products, decision-making models for recovering, refurbishing, and reusing components from returned products, creating product and component traceability, effective disassembly processes, material grading, and automatization of remanufacturing processes. The project will work closely with several industrial partners to develop operational solutions and real-world impact.

The work will commence in collaboration with a dedicated team of experienced researchers, lab engineers, and PhD students associated with the project, and in collaboration with researchers at partner university and a private company facilitating innovation activities.

To this end, we seek candidates who are enthusiastic about circular manufacturing, are motivated by driving change in industry, and with experience in research within one or preferably more of the following topics is desired:

  • Circular manufacturing systems
  • Systems modelling, manufacturing systems, value chains or supply chains.

Enterprise IT systems

  • Manufacturing Innovation
  • Learning Factorie
  • Product circularity or remanufacturing

Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research, emphasizing innovative solutions for manufacturing systems. You will be expected to balance applied industrial engagement with a strong research focus. Publishing research findings in leading international journals and conferences is a central aspect of the role.

The ideal candidate will also be involved in various teaching responsibilities. This will include delivering lectures in both undergraduate and graduate programs, specifically within the B.Sc. ENG programs in Global Business Engineering, as well as M.Sc. programs in Management Engineering. And supervising student projects at both bachelor's and master's levels, providing guidance and mentorship to develop the next generation of engineers.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as PostDoc. presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant research area, such as e.g. Manufacturing Engineering, Management Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related field
  • Strong research potential demonstrated through publications
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal)

  • Industry collaboration experience
  • Knowledge of Danish or willingness to learn
