The Department of Sustainability and Planning at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a position as associate professor in the field of Artificial Intelligence for applications in the broader sustainabil-ity and planning domains as per November 1st or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a 3-year fixed-term position.
The department was established in 1975. Today, the department is located in two beautiful harbour-front loca-tions in Aalborg and Copenhagen. We have more than 250 employees and approximately 1,160 students.
Our research and study programs are rooted in sustainability and the green transition. This means we conduct research in areas such as circular economy, technology, urban-, energy-, and environmental planning, as well as sustainable transition and design. Sustainability is central to our work in environmental assessment and marine management. In surveying and land use, sustainability is reflected in our efforts in nature restoration and climate adaptation.
As society continues to develop digitally, we also focus on responsible technology development, addressing real-life challenges. Our problem-oriented approach and close collaboration with businesses and public organizations form the foundation of all our study programs. Additionally, our engineering programs are among the best in Europe.

Your job responsibilities
As associate professor of AI for sustainability and planning you will contribute to the department’s research and teaching environment and to the faculty’s overall research strategy. You will contribute to the development of the department both independently and in collaboration with others via your research of high international quality. You will also ensure that your teaching maintains a high academic and didactic standard. It is expected that you possess excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network which you can bring into play in your con-tribution to the academic development of Aalborg University and its profile both nationally and internationally.
Your main tasks will consist of:
- Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
- Teaching and supervision of bachelor’s and master’s degree students and contribution to the development of new teaching activities.
- To contribute to the funding with the help of external research funding.
- Supervision of PhD students and contributing to the development of the faculty's PhD courses.
- Involvement in assessment and committee work at Aalborg University.
- Dissemination of your research to the outside world.
More specifically, the tasks for this position will include
- Supporting the development and coordination of AI application and integration initiatives within existing research areas at the Department, that span broadly across sustainability and planning domains.
- Contribute to creating synergy and collaboration across research groups focused on AI application and inte-gration.
- Rather than to develop new AI methods, the expectation is to bring existing AI tools and technologies into play in an application-oriented context within the Department’s research.
- Supporting researchers in the use of relevant AI solutions and upskilling of staff in the use and understanding of AI.
- Supporting research groups in obtaining external funding for projects focusing fully or partly on AI integration.
You will report to the Head of Department Anne Merrild Hansen.
Administratively and for the daily activities you will be affiliated to the Life Cycle Sustainability group. Howev-er, it is expected that you will collaborate and have contacts with all research groups at the Department.
Your competences
You have established yourself with a prominent, independent profile within the broader area of data science with focus on Artificial Intelligence. You have a solid background as data scientists and your skillset includes experi-ence with machine learning, data analytics, big data handling and analysis, data engineering and management, and general competences in digitalization. You are familiar with Generative AI at theoretical level and applied level and are updated on the latest development in this area. Since the position is about AI implementation, a key requirement is to have demonstrated experience with AI applied in production. Having a good knowledge, previ-ous experience, or background in the domain areas of sustainability, environmental management, and planning broadly speaking is a strong advantage. You possess documented solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level, and you have experience with academic leadership tasks in a research group. You have broad international cooperative partnerships and experience of collaborations with private and public-sector organizations. At the same time, you have experience of applying for funding from national and international funding bodies. It is an advantage if you have stayed or been employed at one or more internationally recognized research institutions or industry positions.
As a person, you are dedicated and possess advanced communication skills. You can build relationships based on trust with students, colleagues and partners. As a lecturer you communicate the newest and relevant knowledge in a committed, clear and comprehensible manner. As a supervisor you are competent, inspiring and supportive.
You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.
We expect you to be able to write and speak English at the academic level.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.
It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.
