Associate professor in life cycle assessment of buildings

Jobbeskrivelse

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment (BUILD), a permanent position as associate professor in life cycle assessment of buildings is open for appointment in the Division of Sustainability of Buildings in Copenhagen from May 1st 2026.

Research environment
The Department of the Built Environment is Denmark's largest department in construction, civil engineering, and the built environment. The research at BUILD is rooted in the field of engineering, but it also contains important and comprehensive elements from the social sciences and the humanities.

The Department of the Built Environment at Aalborg University is a leading national centre for research and education in sustainable architecture, building technology, and urban development. The department integrates engineering and design competences to address the environmental challenges of the built environment. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research environment that works closely with public authorities, industry, and international organisations on the development of tools and standards for the net-zero and circular built environment.

The Division of Sustainability of Buildings hosts projects on sustainability assessment of buildings, life cycle assessment (LCA), circular economy, materials and design strategies, among others. The department values interdisciplinary collaboration and expects the new associate professor to play an active role in connecting methodological and applied research domains.

Job description
Aalborg University seeks a candidate with a distinguished research profile in life-cycle assessment (LCA) and whole-life carbon accounting for the built environment, with emphasis on the transition to net-zero and circular construction at across building and urban scales. The successful applicant will strengthen the university’s strategic research on sustainable construction and decarbonisation pathways for the built environment.

The Associate Professor is expected to lead high-impact, interdisciplinary research that integrates quantitative environmental modelling and policy-relevant carbon benchmarking to support evidence-based decision-making. Core activities include advancing methodologies for life-cycle environmental impact assessment; embedding circularity and sufficiency principles within life-cycle and performance-based frameworks; and optimising built environment systems to accelerate mitigation and carbon-removal strategies in alignment with net-zero objectives. A key ambition is to extend assessment and modelling from individual buildings to urban districts and building stocks, linking engineering innovation with systemic sustainability transitions.

The appointee will actively engage in European and Nordic research networks on whole-life carbon methodologies and harmonised carbon-limit values. The position offers the opportunity to influence the emerging regulatory and standardisation landscape that supports the transition towards net zero carbon buildings and cities.

Teaching
The associate professor will contribute to teaching at bachelor’s and master’s, and supervision of PhD students within topics such as life-cycle assessment of buildings and construction products, circular economy in the built environment and sustainable building assessment systems and tools. Experience with pedagogical integration of LCA and design education will be considered an advantage. Aalborg University encourages innovative teaching practices that engage students in research-based and problem-oriented learning.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.
