At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU ENERGY, a position as Postdoc in AI-Driven Grid Flexibility Coordination and Energy Storage Integration, is open for appointment from 01.03.2026 to 31.08.2027 (18 months) or soon hereafter with possibility of extension.

Your work tasks
The position is based on strong collaboration with highly involved industrial partners and is offered in relation to the Offshore Renewable Energy Systems research group. The Postdoc will be positioned in the Esbjerg Energy Section. Research areas will focus on AI-driven control systems, grid-forming inverter technologies, and intelligent energy storage integration using second-life EV batteries. As a Postdoctoral Researcher in AI-Driven Grid Flexibility Coordination and Energy Storage Integration, your main tasks will include:

  • Develop AI-driven control strategies for grid-forming inverters to enhance grid flexibility, reliability and stability.
    • Apply machine learning and AI tools for the battery system health estimation and maintenance prediction and integrate analytics into energy and battery management systems.
    • Collaborate with industrial partners on validation through hardware-in-the-loop testing and real-world demonstrations.
    • Contribute technical evidence for compliance standards and publish research in leading journals and conferences.

The department is located in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, and this position is based at the Esbjerg campus. AAU Energy employs approximately 300 staff members from diverse national backgrounds, including 25 administrative staff, and regularly hosts 30–40 guest researchers from around the world.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

Your competencies
The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics and control with strong focus on AI and machine learning and should be able to design and validate advanced control strategies for grid-forming inverters, apply AI and machine learning to battery health prediction, and contribute to integration of energy storage into flexible grid architectures. You will work closely with industrial partners, so the ability to translate research into practical solutions and communicate clearly across disciplines is essential. Personally, we value someone who is proactive, structured, and open to teamwork in a dynamic, international environment. You should be motivated to publish high-quality research and engage actively in project meetings.
